Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) changeover

Who is it suitable for?


The LPG changeover (CoNGLP1) from natural Gas is for experienced operatives who wish to commission, install, service and repair LPG appliances in permanent dwellings.


Permanent dwellings (PD) include the majority of domestic properties, such as houses, flats and bungalows and a small amount of commercial  installations such as public houses and offices. Allowing you to work on LPG appliances for which you already hold a natural gas ACS qualification.

If you would like to work on LPG in other situations, for example, caravans or residential park homes there are additional qualifications:

  • Leisure Accommodation Vehicles (LAV) encompassing static holiday caravans touring caravans and motorhomes. LAV consist of all appliances that are built on a steel chassis, rather than solid brick or concrete foundations.
  • Residential Park Homes (RPH) covering types of temporary structure that people live in on a permanent basis, which is built on chassis and not on brick or concrete foundations.
  • Closed Flue Gas Fires (HTRLP2), designed to test the gas safety competence of an operative undertaking install, exchange, disconnect,  service, repair and commission.

Course Programme

Candidates will be assessed in the following areas:

  • Gas safety legislation and standards including emergency actions and procedures
  • Operation and positioning of emergency isolation, flow control and valves for cylinders
  • Products and characteristics of combustion (including performance analysis)
  • Characteristics of LPG and supply pressures
  • Cylinder location, safety and sizing
  • Installation of pipework and fittings
  • Tightness testing and purging
  • Operation and checking of appliance gas safety devices and controls
  • Unsafe situations, use of emergency notices and warning labels
  • Chimney standards, inspection and testing
  • Installation of open, closed, balanced and fan assisted chimneys
  • Re-establish existing gas supply and re-light appliances

Expiry

5 years. Candidates can undertake the re-assessment of any element up to 6 months early without losing any time (MOT Style). Previous certificates must be produced at the time of assessment as evidence.

Entry Requirements

For the initial assessment candidates must meet the entry requirements as laid out in guidance note 8 for category 1, 2, and 3 entrants (see ACS scheme rules). 

Reassessment candidates must have held the element previously and can undertake the reassessment up to 6 months early without losing any time (MOT Style). Previous certificates must be produced prior to the assessment. If this has expired within 12 months of the assessment date  the initial assessment must be undertaken.

Assessment is carried out using a variety of methods including multiple choice, short written response, scenario questions and observed practical assessment.
