Domestic Gas Heating InstallerExperienced Operative: excluding RWE

Who is it suitable for?

The Domestic Gas Heating Installer Experienced Operatives Course is a Managed Learning Programme (MLP) designed for operatives with transferable skills who are familiar with working in related areas such as plumbing, heating or gas and looking to gain the relevant qualifications in order to join the Gas Safe Register and work on gas appliances.

Upon successful completion of the training and on-site portfolio candidates will be at the correct-level to progress to the ACS gas assessment course.

The MLP is a pre-requisite to undertake Accreditation Certification Scheme (ACS) gas assessments and become a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

*What’s involved?

The Experienced Operatives route includes 15 days training in the following areas:

  • Legislation, Health and Safety
  • Combustion and its controls
  • Chimney Systems
  • Ventilation
  • Pressure, Flow, Tightness testing and Purging
  • Domestic Pipework Installation
  • Electrical Systems, Controls and Components
  • Heating Design, Heat Loss and Comfort Conditions
  • Installation and Servicing of Domestic Central Heating and Hot Water Appliances
  • Installation and Servicing of Domestic Cooking Appliances
  • Principles and Procedures for Fault Diagnosis

Candidates are required to achieve an on-site ‘Supervised Workplace Practice’ portfolio. The guided learning time for completion is estimated at 65 working days.

This course excludes 'Realistic Work Environment' (RWE) training, assessments and portfolio monitoring. All evidence is to be achieved and completed within your work placement under the Supervision of a Gas Safe Registered company or mentor.

Where might it lead?

On successful completion of the Domestic Gas Heating Installer Experienced Operative Course candidates will receive a training competence certificate for the industry recognised Managed Learning Programme, which is necessary to access ACS gas assessments for Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1) plus 2 appliances, Central Heating Boilers / Water Heaters (CENWAT) and Cookers (CKR1).

Entry Requirements

Experienced Operatives will undertake a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) interview containing questions and assessments to measure their knowledge and confirm their experience.

Candidates must also have access to carry out gas work under the Supervision of a Gas Safe Registered company or mentor. 

Delivery Method

A mixture of home study, theory and practical training.

Assessment

Units will be assessed via practical and theory assessments.

Portfolio's will be internally assessed and externally verified.
