Level 3 (advanced) Apprenticeship in Gas Engineering (9074-03)

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is aimed at new technicians entering the gas industry. It provides the skills and knowledge for both basic and complex domestic gas systems.

What’s involved?

Gas Engineering involves the safe installation, commission, decommission and ongoing service and maintenance of domestic gas appliances.

There are three stages to the apprenticeship training.

  • Stage 1 – Induction and Core Skills Training: To teach safe working practices in gas utilisation as well as building services and structures.
  • Stage 2 – Knowledge Training: Practical and theory assignments and knowledge assessments.
  • Stage 3 – Workplace Training: Creation of a portfolio detailing practical activities, skills and competencies carried out in the workplace. Including practical observations of work activity in terms of quality and behaviour.

Appliances and work categories covered in the Gas Engineering course include Core Domestic Natural Gas (CCN1), Combustion Performance Analysis (CPA1), Boilers (CENWAT) and Gas Meter Safety (MET1).

Upon successful completion of the work log portfolio and Gas Safe registration candidates will progress to the ‘Gateway’ of the End Point Assessment (EPA).

The EPA is the final stage (the last three months of the apprenticeship), where the apprentice demonstrates to an independent end-point assessor competence of their knowledge, skills and behaviours.
